Synthesis and Properties of Magnetic Nanoparticles with Potential Applications in Cancer Diagnostic

The size, shape and composition of magnetic nanoparticles are very attractive for diagnostic tools of cancer tumors and targeting treatment in HIV infection. The goal of this paper is the preparation from colloidal solutions of Co and NiCo alloy nanoparticles with applications at magnetic imaging examinations of cancer tumors. Co and NiCo nanoparticles have been prepared via two soft chemical preparation routes and characterized for microstructural properties by Transmission Electron Microscopy. The preparation of cobalt nanoparticles has made using cobalt nitrate reduction with sodium borohydride. Cobalt nitrate hexahydrate, Co(NO3)2•6H2O, in concentration 0, 01M-0, 02M, is dissolved in the inversed micelle system, sodium bis (2-ethylphenyl) sulfosuccinat/toluene. In our paper, particles of cobalt-nickel alloy were prepared by refluxing an ethylene glycol solution of their acetates containing PVP. In order to obtain alloy particles of the composition Co0, 9Ni0, 1, a mixture of Co(acetate)2•4H2O and Ni(acetate)2•4H2O was dissolved in a precise volume of ethylene glycol and was refluxed at 198°C for 10 hours. At the end of reaction the particles were precipitated by adding excess water and isolated by centrifugation. The magnetic behavior of Co nanoparticles and NiCo nanoparticles reveal as the magnetic metal nanoparticles can be used to enhance the signal from magnetic resonance imaging examinations.
