Effect of surfactants on the size-distribution of starch nanoparticles during wet grinding

Abstract: Various kinds of conventional and non-conventional surfactants were utilized for the fabrication of nanoparticles of starch and to reduce the size distribution. The surfactants used were pluronic F-68, span 80, span 20, Aerosol TR (ATR) and Aerosol OT (AOT). Starch in premix form with either of the surfactants 0.5 to 2 % were administered to Netsch MiniCer® laboratory circulation machine (Netsch, Germany). The speed was adjusted to 1500 rpm (25 Hz). Zicronium beads of 1mm diameter were used as a grinding media. Pluronic F-68 1% reduced the starch particle size to minimum level (353.33 nm) with 1 hr grinding time. Whereas, other surfactants used at this speed could reduce the size to or above 399 nm. However, at 0.5 hr grinding time, 0.5% pluronic reduced the size to 335.00nm. The other surfactants at this speed yielded particle size equal to or above 382 nm. Pluronic demonstrated the highest efficiency in size reduction followed by ATR-AOT (1:4) combination.
