SUMMARY Nanostructures are created by stimulating the mechanical response of polymer materials upon confining protonation reaction locally via dip-pen. ABSTRACT While dip-pen nanolithography uses a sharp tip to anchor molecules on the substrate to form nanostructures, an alternative approach is presented here to rather exploit the responsiveness of the substrate. Acidic phosphate buffer molecules are delivered into ultraviolet-crosslinked films to swell the polymer material by a protonation-based mechanism. The experiment aim to provide the first demonstration of stimulating the mechanical response of polymer materials by confining protonation reaction locally and in a controlled manner.
