The benefits and challenges of Industry-Start Up-University collaboration for product development

There is an emerging trend for corporate R&D groups to engage with startups as corporations need to increase the pace of finding breakthrough technologies and make rapid transfer of science and technology into the marketplace. Technology innovation and development with university spawned start-ups is particularly interesting as industry can leverage years of academic research that is now closer to commercialization. The UIDP researched trends, benefits, challenges, motives for engagement, modes of interaction, regulatory environment, financial landscape and metrics for evaluating the success for industry partnerships with academic spun out start-ups. This talk reviews several examples from different industry sectors that highlight pitfalls to avoid, showstoppers and strategies for risk management for collaboration.
