Synthesis and Characterization of Magnetorheological Fluids with Super Paramagnetic Nanomaterials in Polymeric Matrix

Magneto-rheological (MR) fluids represent an exciting family of smart materials that have the unique ability to undergo rapid (within a few µs) changes in their apparent viscosity on the application of an external magnetic field. Here we introduce a novel magneto-rheological fluid with a blend of nano sized (5-10nm) and micro sized (5-10µm) iron particles in a polymeric matrix. The magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4) are put in the polymeric matrix were characterized using transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray diffraction XRD. Then, a systematic study of magnetic and rheological properties of MR fluids were conducted in the presence of varying magnetic field. The results to date are being used to design MR fluids of specific properties to suit different applications. The current exploitation avenue of this work is high yield strength fluids MR fluids used in pin-type array Magneto-rheological (MR) fluids fixturing systems for holding complex geometry components.
