This work reports on the healing of translucency, roughness, nanoindents, and shallow scratches in polymer/nano-particle composites. Mechanical loading were applied on polymer/self-healing additive/nano-particle composites. The concentration of nano-particles and self-healing additives were optimized to 1.0 vol% and 3.0 vol%, respectively, based on the mechanical reinforcements and wear-resistance. Nanoindentation, nanoscratching, sand falling, and Taber Abrasion tests were used to damage the surfaces and healed with temperature stimulation. Healing of surface defects with nanometers and micrometeres were examined using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) as a function of temperature and time. Besides, the addition of CAB can greatly modify the surface and reduce roll-off angles of water droplet, benefiting the self-healing properties. The composite coatings generated in this research have wide applications in optical systems, energy components, and mechanical parts requiring durable mechanical reliability and optical transparency.
