Pelletized silica and polyethyleneimine composites for CO2 capture via adsorption

Amine adsorbent powders are of broad interest to facilitate CO2 capture towards reducing atmospheric greenhouse gas. It is recognized, however, that industrial adsorption processes require pelletized rather than powdered adsorbents. Mesoporous silica and branched polyethyleneimine composites are of particular interest for post combustion CO2 capture owing to their high CO2 selectivity, large CO2 capacities and water tolerance. The pelletization of such materials, however, has been found to be problematic due to product extrusion under compression force. This paper highlights the potential of pelletized forms of mesoporous silica and branched polyethyelenimine composites (MCF-PEIs), as prepared via a patent pending pelletization process, to provide a viable option to facilitate post combustion CO2 capture via adsorption processes.
