Solid amine sorbent powders are of broad interest to facilitate CO2 capture towards reducing atmospheric greenhouse gas. It is recognized, however, that pelletized rather powdered adsorbents are required for industrial adsorption separation processes. “Molecular basket” type sorbents, comprising for example an amine sorbent phase (e.g. branched polyethyleneimine, polyallylamine, tetraethylenepentamine) combined with a mesoporous support, are of particular interest for post combustion CO2 capture owing to their high CO2 selectivity, large CO2 capacities and water tolerance, and to the simplicity of their preparation. Shaping of such materials into pellet forms, however, has been found to be problematic due to product softness, greasiness and/or stickiness, and/or product extrusion under compression force. This work highlights the benefit of recently patented technology to overcome these problems, and so, to better facilitate preparation of pelletized forms of a range of such composite sorbents, and their potential for post combustion CO2 capture via adsorption processes.
