Novel Acrylamide Assisted Polymeric Citrate Route for the Synthesis of Nanocrystalline ZrO2 Powders for Dental Applications

Zirconium oxide has been receiving importance because of its use in wide range of biomedical applications, which is due to its high mechanical strength, fracture toughness and bio-compatibility. Recently, nano structured zirconia powders exhibit enhanced performance as fillers in dental composites. In the present work, acrylamide assisted polymeric citrate route is investigated for the synthesis of nanocrystalline ZrO2 powders. Zirconium oxy chloride was mixed with concentrated nitric acid and heated at 80 0C for 10 min. Citric acid (CA) and acrylamide (ACD) solutions were added to the above mixture and the resulting solution we heated at 80 oC under constant stirring. The evaporation lead to the formation of polymeric resin. Further, the resin was dried at 150oC for 24 hours and the resulted porous intermediate was calcined at 600 oC to obtained the nano crystalline ZrO2 powders. TG/DTA thermogram indicated the formation of crystalline ZrO2 structure at 575oC and further, it was confirmed by XRD and FTIR analysis. The TEM images showed the agglomeration of fine ZrO2 particles and the particles size is found to be ~10-20 nm. Synthesized ZrO2 particles are further used for the development of dental nanocomposite.
