Nanotechnologies are emerging around the world. Nanoparticles are finding new industrial applications every day. Due to the variety of nanoparticles, toxicology studies will take time to establish the dangerousness of every kind of nanoparticle. Today in the absence of reliable data on the toxicity of nanoparticles, the only way to ensure that nanomaterials are not dangerous is to verify that they do not release their nanoparticles. No standard method for the characterization of nanoparticle release is currently available. A new method for the characterisation of nanoparticle releases into the air from nanomaterials using a normalized Taber equipment is developed. The releases from different polymers containing different nananoparticles were analyzed. The released nanoparticles were then collected on filters for further analysis by electron microscopy of chemical composition and size. No free or agglomerated CNT or nanoparticles were observed. The influence of UV ageing on nanoparticle release was investigated as well.
