The use of p-n junction nanowires as solar cells has received an increased amount of attention with results published on both individual silicon nanowires functioning as nano-solar cells[1] and on larger surface areas covered with silicon nanowires[2]. This presentation will be about the use of nanoplates as solar cells. Nanoplates are a new sub-group of bottom-up grown nanostructures with a two-dimensional shape[3]. The key properties of the nanoplate structure will be presented with emphasis on their suitability for use as PV elements. Optical characteristics of a nanoplate covered surface will be presented and recent results on the implementation of the p-n nanoplates into solar cells will be shown together with preliminary characterization data.
