Improvements in biological hydrogen production by microbial fermentations

A series of physiological and genetic manipulations that improve hydrogen yields are described. The possible improvement of yields and rates through the heterologous expression of various hydrogenases will be discussed. In initial photofermentation experiments we show 50% conversion (4 moles H2/mole substrate) of glycerol to hydrogen. This could be an important avenue for valorizing biodiesel-derived glycerol.
