Grinding and Dispersion Equipment For Nano Scale Applications

This paper will address the material science of reducing particles to nano size, highlighting some of the machines and processes that achieve that result. One notable innovation that will be discussed is an inline disperser that successfully mixes fine powders with liquids by creating a vacuum that causes the capillary air in solid agglomerates to expand, breaking them up through internal gas expansion. It will also compare the efficacy of a high-energy pin mill compared to that of the “traditional” disc mill. Other areas addressed include: deagglomeration vs. primary particle size reduction; the effect of bead charge on grinding efficiency and filtration effect; identifying optimum bead size and density as necessitated by product viscosity; the science of bead separation systems; and desirable product characteristics when selecting grinding and dispersion equipment. Conclusions will be drawn in the areas of maintaining product integrity during particle reduction, economic efficiencies of proper equipment selection, and reduction of workplace hazards, among others.
