Fluorescent-Plasmonic Quantum Dot-Gold based Nanohybrids: Basic Research for Next Generation Materials and Tracking of Biological Events

A novel hybrid nanoparticle is presented based on encapsulated fluorescent CdSe/ZnSe/ZnS core/shell/shell quantum dots (QDs) with zwitterionic capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). This hybrid is fully characterizes by variouse techniques including optical spectroscopy, (cryo) transmission electron microscopy as well as fluorescence quenching studys, which are knwon to be highly sensitive to the composition of the material. Thermodynamic data e.g. dissociation constants are extracted, which are of significant interest for the logical design of nanoparticle-based next generation materials in a variety of scientific fields. These materials are highly stable and biofunctionalization is straight forward using direct coordination on the AuNP surface. This may open up new insights into the structural response of artificial nanostructures to biological environment as well as the study of a variety of biological events.
