Evolution of self-assembled Bi2O3/LDHs nanostructures to mixtures of mixed oxides and their photocatalytic efficiency under UV and solar light

Self-assemblies of nanoparticles of Bi2O3 and the clay matrices of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were fabricated using the manifestation of the structural memory effect of the LDHs in Bi(NO3)3 aqueous solutions, at room temperature. Nanoparticles of Bi2O3 were obtained, organized and stabilized directly on the surface of the clay, without using any organic product. The evolution of Bi2O3/LDHs, by controlled thermal treatment, to mixtures mixed oxides types: Bi2O3/MgAl2O4, Bi2O3/ZnO-ZnAl2O4 and Bi2O3/ZnO-ZnFe2O4, was studied. UV-Vis analysis and the calculated band gap (Eg) values indicate the photo-cooperativity of the nanocomponents in the photocatalytic systems. The catalysts efficiency was studied in the degradation processes of some industrial dyes and/or acetophenone, under solar and UV-Vis irradiation.
