Electrical conductivity of carbon nanopowder fillers and their respective polymer composites prepared via latex technology

The electrical conductivity of graphene, multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and carbon black (CB) nanopowders, and graphite powder is characterized in the form of paper-like films (buckypapers) and by means of powder compression. Subsequently, carbon filler /polystyrene (PS) composites are prepared using the well-known latex technology. The latex concept enables the incorporation and proper dispersion of nanofillers into any kind of highly viscous polymer such as PS, e.g. synthesized by emulsion polymerization or similar processes. The fillers are first dispersed in water with the aim of surfactants and controlled ultra-sonication, mixed with PP latex, freeze-dried and hot-press molded into composite tablets. A detailed comparison of the conductive behavior between the different nanofillers and the respective nanocomposites is presented.
