Effects of Electric Field on the Growth of One-dimensional Carbon Materials in the Chemical Vapor Deposition Process (PCVD) Nyan-Hwa Tai* a), Chi-Young Lee b), I-Chang Chiu a), and I-Nan Lin b) a)Department of Materials Science and Engineering b)Materials Science Center National Tsing-Hua University Hsin-Chu, Taiwan, 30013 Candle-like carbon fibers with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as candlewick were synthesized in the chemical vapor deposition process (CVD). In this process, Si wafer coated with sputtered Fe0.8Co0.2 alloy was adopted as the substrate which was placed in a tube furnace. Benzene mixed with hydrogen was adopted as gaseous precursor for carbon deposition. In order to obtain aligned array of carbon nanotubes, an electric filed was applied on the wafer. The field induces the force applied on the dipole to rotate the tube during growth process. Therefore, effect of thermal fluctuation on the CNTs can be alleviated and formation of aligned carbon nanotubes becomes feasible. In this work, growth of directional carbon material can be obtained by apply 120 V bias voltage even the electrodes were separated in a distance of 1 mm. It is found that the electric field can extend to the edge of the electrode plate. Moreover, formation of catalyst islands from different Fe0.8Co0.2 thickness was investigated and the influence of island size on the growth of carbon materials was studied. The emission current density obtained was 3 mA/cm2 under a 3.4 V/mm applied field for the synthesized carbon materials. Furthermore, effects of reaction pressure, temperature, reactant concentration, and voltage of the applied electric field on the growth of the CNTs and CNFs (carbon nanofibers) were also studied.
