A series of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) membranes containing a carbonate ion sensible ionophore, a lipophilic additive, and a plasticizer in various compositions was prepared and then investigated in detail in the aspects of properties and ion-selective-electrode performance. This study found that the the glass transition temperature Tg varies sensitively with changing the composition in the PVC membrane. In particular, loading of the plasticizer showed a great impact to lower the Tg of the PVC membrane. Moreover, the plasticizer loadings influenced very much the carbonate sensing performance of the PVC membrane; as the plasticizer loading increased, the membrane?ion sensing performance was improved. On the other hand, the ionophore and lipophilic additive loadings were found to affect the PVC membrane?Tg but their impacts to change the Tg were not high in comparison to that of the plasticizer. However, the loading levels of the ionophore and lipophilic additive were found to affect significantly the PVC membrane?ion sensing performance. All the results will be discussed in details with considering chemical, physical, and electrochemical nature of the PVC membranes in various compositions.
