Ferrimagnetic glass-ceramics are potential candidates for magnetic induction hyperthermia, which is one form of inducing deep-regional hyperthermia, by using a magnetic field. The aim of this work is the preparation and characterization of innovative bioactive ferrimagnetic glass-ceramics in the system SiO2–Na2O–CaO–P2O5–FeO–Fe2O3 by using three different synthesis methods. These biomaterials contain different amounts of magnetite crystals, homogeneously distributed in an amorphous matrix. The morphology of the crystals was studied by scanning electron micrography (SEM) and transmission electron micrography (TEM). The crystalline phases were analysed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Glass transition temperature and thermal stability were investigated by the thermal analyses (DTA, TGA). Magnetic hysteresis cycles were analysed using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) with a maximum applied field of 12 kOe, at room temperature, in quasi-static conditions. Calorimetric measurements were carried out using a magnetic induction furnace, with a magnetic field of 40 kA/m and a frequency of 440 kHz. The surface of these materials can be easily modified, in order to bind specific proteins for magnetic drug targeting.
