SBA-15 has been successfully applied as a support to prepare supported metal catalysts[1]. Nevertheless, Conventional impregnation method cannot assure the incorporation of active species into SBA-15 mesopores. The modification of silica support using ethylene glycol (EG) significantly modified surface properties of silica support, resulting in the enhanced metal-support interaction. In this paper, Mesoporous SBA-15 supported Cu-Ni bimetallic nanoparticles modified with Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation. It was noteworthy that SBA-15 should be treated with ethylene glycol (EG) before the impregnation. The results of BET and TEM investigations indicated that Cu-Ni nanoparticles had an average size of 6.5 nm and uniformly dispersed on the internal pore surface. Besides, the catalysts prepared by treated SBA-15 exhibited higher catalytic activity than that obtained from non-treated SBA-15 in direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate. The high catalytic activity of Cu-Ni/Ce0.5Zr0.5O2/SBA-15-EG nanocatalysts could be attributed to the excellent dispersion of active metal nanoparticles and strong interaction between the metal particles and the surface of our carrier. On the basis of the present study, it is believed that EG pretreated silica support will find promising application in preparing highly dispersed Cu-Ni catalysts.
