The state of Arkansas and the FDA Center of Toxicological Research have begun a collaborative effort to develop techniques for high-throughput, rapid screening of existing and yet-to-be developed nanomaterials. To accomplish this the Arkansas Research Consortium in Nanotoxicity (ARCN) was established as a partnership between 5 State universities and the FDA. We present the research objectives of this Consortium and describe work that is being conducted toward this goal. Current research includes: efforts to develop and optimize accurate characterization of carbon-based nanoparticles (e.g. graphenes), develop techniques for measurement and detection of these nanomaterials in biological and environmental matrices, synthesize functionalized graphenes designed to enhance detection in these matrices, and assess in vitro and environmental impacts of exposure to these materials.
