HydroFlame – A Low Carbon Intensity Process for Low-Mobility Oil Recovery

HydroFlame is a new concept of burning a fuel directly inside a rotating stream of water. Because of the direct contact between the flame and water, very high heat transfer coefficients are achieved which render the HydroFlame devices as quite compact and highly efficient heat transfer systems. This presentation describes the recent development of a downhole steam generator (DHSG) based on the “flame-in-water” concept of HydroFlame. Because of its unique characteristics that enable economic advantages, HydroFlame technology offers to mitigate the two major environmental concerns associated with thermal recovery of heavy oils and bitumen, namely CO2 emissions and cost-effective produced water recycle.
