Waste Flue Gas CO to Innovative Biofuel Production

,

Keywords: , ,

LanzaTech has developed a novel gas fermentation technology that can economically convert carbon monoxide containing gas with any amount of hydrogen to fuel and chemical products. The technology can process gas streams from industrial sources, such as waste gases from steel mills, refineries, or petrochemicals plants. Other gas sources can include syngas from gasification of biomass, coal, refinery residues (such as petcoke, vacuum resids, and heavy oils) and municipal solid waste, and reformed biogas and natural gas. LanzaTech can convert these gas streams into ethanol and 23-butanediol, and other alcohols that have various downstream applications. LanzaTech can convert these gas streams into ethanol and 23-butanediol, other alcohols. This technology enables efficient conversion of carbon(often waste carbon) into fuel and chemical products. The products can be produced at the scale needed to satisfy energy demands, using feedstocks that do not compete with the food supply. The technology has been proven in a pilot plant that has been in operation since 2008 at a steel mill in Glenbrook, New Zealand. A demonstration plant is under construction at a Baosteel plant in Shanghai, due to start up in early 2012, with a full scale commercial facility planned for 2013.
