Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) can be functionalized covalently at SWCNT ends, covalently at SWCNT sidewalls, or by complexation with SWCNT sidewalls. Each type of product has a wide range of applications, but sometimes the full development of applications is hindered by incomplete product characterization. We have developed a convenient method for analysis of these products by solution phase proton NMR. In each case, protons in the vicinity of the covalent bond or complexed functional group are shifted downfield in the NMR. This enables determining the position of covalent bond or complex formation.
