The Center for Accelerated Applications at the Nanoscale (CAAN), established in 2004 by Governor Mike Round’s 2010 Initiative, is a group of distinguished South Dakota researchers who have joined together in focused efforts to conduct applied research and development relating to nanoscience and engineering. As the center is focused on the “productization” of nanotechnology, the programs initiated by the Center are chosen for their strong commercialization potential and mutual interest to industrial partners. CAAN creates an atmosphere for collaborative research and development between Industry, the State’s research Faculty, associated regional consortia, and other public institutions (national laboratories and universities). Members of the Center include Faculty and research staff with expertise in numerous scientific and engineering disciplines. Areas of current developmental emphasis include: Nanomaterials for flexible and conformal electronics Nanocomposites with improved gas barrier and mechanical performance Nanoprobing of integrated circuits Nanofiber synthesis and applications Nanosensors (industrial, environmental, military) Nano-fluids and -lubricants Catalytic nanostructures Nanomaterials for third generation photovoltaics Energetic nanomaterials Metal and ceramic nano-powders and –composites The Center Director is interested in discussing mutually beneficial relationships with organizations interested in products, processes, and investment based on the commercial application of these technologies.
