Tis wrok introduced a novel method for sunthesizing non-oxide ceramic powders by the combination of low temperature solution combustion synthesis (LCS) and carbothermal reduction. Firstly, a homogeneous precursor consisting of fine oxide and carbon particles has been prepared by the LCS method using a mixed solution.Subsequently, the non-oxide ceramic powders have been fabricated by the carbothermal reduction of the LCS precursor. The advantages of LCS, such as energy saving, easiness and quickness, well-defined chemical compositions, and homogeneous distribution of the elements can be fully taken. The oxides and carbon particles are extremely small and distributed homogeneously in the obtained precursor. Therefore, the carbothermal reduction condition can be improved greatly and non-oxide ceramic powders with fine particles and uniform distribution can be produced at lower temperature or shorter reaction times. In the present work, several kinds of nanosized non-oxide ceramic powders including AlN, TiN, ZrC, and TiC are successfully synthesized by this modified carbothermal reduction route. This work has broadened the applications of the LCS and enriched the theory and practice of the combustion synthesis. And this study would be of great importance in promoting the use of LCS method for the synthesis of other nanosized non-oxide ceramics.
