Nanocrystalline CoFe2O4 having wide ranges of applications in many fields like magnetic data storage, catalysis, ferrofluids, sensors, actuators as well as biomedical applications such as targeted drug delivery, hyperthermia, etc., Recently, CoFe2O4 nanostructures has used as anode material in lithium ion battery, with improved electrochemical performance. Synthesis and stabilization of nanocrystalline metal oxides including ferrites is an important task, since nanostructured metal surfaces are highly reactive and lead to the formation of secondary particles. Hence, varieties of wet chemical processes were investigated for the synthesis of nanocrystalline metal oxides with desired properties. Among them, combustion route is known to be simple, cost effective and versatile low temperature process, which is capable of producing nanocrystalline oxide powders at a lower calcinations temperature in a short time. In the present work citrate-urea assisted combustion process was investigated for the synthesis of nanocrystalline CoFe2O4 powders relatively lower temperature. CoFe2O4 nanostructure was prepared by varying metal ions: citric acid: urea ratio as 1:1:0.5, 1:1:1 and 1:1:2. The process was monitored and final powder was characterized by XRD, FTIR, DSC, SEM-EDS techniques. Among this 1:1:0.5 composition showing better polymerization, high heat generation during combustion, which result in very fine particles with the average crystallite size of 15 nm.
