Traditional fluid based synthesis techniques for the production of nano-materials can have limitations in particle morphology and composition selectivity. Particle size distributions can be insufficiently narrow for a deterministic investigation into the factors affecting magnetic behaviour arising within nano-materials produced on the sub-10 nm scale. Refinements in conventional solution synthesis techniques involve the use of surfactants, concentration control and self limiting formation and growth processes. Spinning disc processing (SDP) technology has potential for overcoming these limitations. This novel technology can generate very thin (1 to 200 µm) fluid films on a rapidly rotating surface (10 to 3000 rpm), within which particle formation occurs, for example the formation of magnetite nano-particles with a mean particle size of 3.7 nm, standard deviation 0.6 nm. Features of SDP technology include: extremely rapid mixing, plug flow across the disc, effective heat and mass transfer, narrow size distribution, tuneable performance and output characteristics, continuous flow, high throughput, low wastage, and solvent efficiency.
