Present study involves the synthesis of and studies on a nanosized coordinate complex of 4-methylpiperazine-1-carbodithioate (4-MPipzcdt) ligand with zinc(II), i.e. Zn(4-MPipzcdt)2, using triphenylphosphine (PPh3) as capping agent. TEM study revealed nanosized particles with size range between 8-12 nm. IR spectroscopic study was used to check the purity of sample. Surface plasmon resonance study of compound exhibited λ max at 292nm. X-ray diffraction pattern of PPh3 capped Zn(4-MPipzcdt)2 showed sharp bands corresponding to crystalline nature of the compound. Electrochemical behaviour of free ligand, sodium 4-methylpiperazine-1-carbodithioato monohydrate (4-MPipzcdtNa.H2O) and nano compound, Zn(4-MPipzcdt)2 showed voltammograms with oxidation potential (Epa) and reduction potential (Epc) = 0.47 V, 0.15 V and 1.24 V, 0.31 V respectively. The synthesized compound was used to study photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange. The lipase activity assay for PPh3 capped Zn(4-MPipzcdt)2 exhibited increased inhibition in activity in the concentration range of 100 µg/ml to 600 µg/ml. Antimicrobial potential of free ligand 4-MPipzcdtNa.H2O and nanosized Zn(4-MPipzcdt)2 compound against bacterial stains, viz. Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas pneumoneae, Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus mutans gave minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values as 250 µg/ml and 50 µg/ml respectively.
