A novel procedure, called magnetic gelatio, is introduced to prepare porous polymeric materials with controlled anisotropic structure. The materials are obtained by destabilizing aqueous dipsersions of magnetic polymer nanoparticles in the presence of magnetic fields, until a percolating network is obtained, which is hardened through partial fusion of the nanoparticles, and characterized by electron microscopy. Brownian dynamics has been used to simulate and better understand the entire magnetic gelation process, and simulation results are qualitatively compared to experimental findings.
