Leveraging SBIR Technology for Advanced Combatant Craft has created an innovative new resin and coating technology Our patent pending Co-Cure technology allows for shop floor alteration of coating and resin properties. The invention relates to coatings and structural layers used to fabricate molded parts, and in particular to co-cured systems having improved adhesion, toughness, flexibility, and structural performance. In one aspect, the invention relates to a gel coat comprising co-cured urethane and vinyl ester, epoxy, or unsaturated polyester components. The gel coats have improved toughness and flexibility, they adhere well to structural layers, and they can be used in a traditional in-mold process. testing has shown that these improved gel coats allow laminates that can withstand 25% greater allowable stress and have a superior bond. In another aspect, the invention relates to an elastomeric coating. The coatings are flexible and tough, they adhere well to structural layers, and unlike conventional urethane coatings, they can be used in a traditional in-mold process. This technology has large implications in producing lighter more structurally efficient composite structures such as wind blades, underwater turbines, boats, aircraft, and ground transportation vehicles.
