Starbons® are a novel family of mesoporous materials derived from polysaccharides, which have surface tunable functionalities ranging from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. This novel Starbon® technology utilizes the natural ability for polysaccharides to retain their organized structure during pyrolysis. The mesoporous Starbon® family consists of continuum of materials from polysaccharides to activated carbon depending on the set temperature. This unique family of materials have shown excellent properties in catalysis, chromatography and adsorption to name a few. We have now transcribed this technology from a mere laboratory curiosity to an commercially viable industrial scale product. The work presented here will describe this journey.
