The rheology, microstructure and mechanical properties of polylactide (PLA)/clay nanocomposites were investigated. The nanocomposites were prepared using a twin screw extruder with and without the aid of supercritical carbon dioxide. Results show that there exists a solid-like behavior in the nanocomposites. TEM results show that the clay is dispersed more homogeneous in the nanocomposites compounded with Sc-CO2. Compared with pure PLA, the elongation at break and tensile strength for nanocomposite compounded with 5 wt% CO2 are improved by 166% and 25%. The impact strength of the nanocomposites exhibits a 32-47% increase.
