Abstract: Lithium based transition-metal (ortho) phosphates have recently attracted attention as potential cathode materials in Li-ion battery. The cathode materials used in secondary Li-ion batteries are usually preferred the layered rock salt oxides like LiCoO2, LiNiO2 and spinal LiMn2O4. Recently, olivine structured LiMPO4 (M= Transition metals) compounds are attracted as an effective cathode materials for lithium ion batteries, due to their excellent cycle ability, thermal stability, low cost, low toxicity, environmental benefits, etc. , when compared to the currently used LiCoO2. The above properties are due to the formation of the three-dimensional open framework of an olivine structures, which are stabilized by the strong covalent bonds between oxygen ions and the P5+ resulting in PO43- tetrahedral poly anions. LiMnPO4 is one of the olivine structured compound prepared by solid state reaction and solution method, resulted in higher crystallize size. Hence, in this paper, we report the synthesis of bare and carbon coated lithium manganese phosphate nano particles by polyol process. LiMnPO4 nanoparticles were prepared by dissolving the Li-acetate, Mn-acetate, ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, as metal ion sources, in ethylene glycol, used as a polyol, under continuous stirring at 1900C for 2 Hr. Also, carbon coated lithium manganese phosphate nano particles using acrylic acid and ethylene glycol, as carbon source, by heating up to 2500C for 2 Hr. All the prepared of bare and carbon coated lithium manganese phosphate nano particles were characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM and EDX. The crystalline phase and the crystallite size of the prepared samples were identified from the measured powder XRD patterns. FT-IR results confirm the presence of PO43- structure in the LiMnPO4 compound. SEM results confirm the microstructure and particle size of the bare and carbon coated LiMnPO4. EDX results confirm the presence of element and their compositions in the bare and carbon coated LiMnPO4.
