This study reports the preparation and characterization of acrylic acid/styrene (AA/St) submicrocapsule having high value of zeta potential by using phytoncide oil as a model material. AA/St submicrocapsules were prepared by miniemulsion copolymerization with 1,3-diphenyl-2-propanone, sodium lauryl sulfate, and m-hexadecane as initiator, surfactant, and cosurfactant, respectively. The effects of monomer ratio, amounts of surfactant and initiator, and agitating speed for micellization on the mean particle size and zeta potential of AA/St submicrocapsules were investigated by dynamic light scattering. FT-IR, scanning electron microscopy, UV-Vis spectrophotometer were also adopted for characterization, including release profile. Mean particle size of AA/St submicrocapsules could be controlled up to ca. 300 nm. Usually zeta potential value of particles over ±30 mV ensures the dispersity and coagulation prevention of particles. AA/St submicrocapsules of this study show high dispersity ascribed to zeta potential of ca. -60 mV. This submicrocapsules can be applied to durable finishing agents for textiles, films, plastics, and so on, including cationized cellulosic fabrics.
