The NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE is a global competition to develop technologies for converting CO2 from power plants and industrial facilities into valuable products. The pilot scale demonstration required teams to operate at a 200 kg/day CO2 input, with evaluation of capture and conversion efficiency, product market and value, land and water resource use, and life cycle emissions. Technology verification procedures were implemented to confirm technology performance and impact claims. Independent verification was valuable providing consistent, repeatable results in evaluating technologies which had not reached commercial maturity – with 40% of teams having verified CO2 conversion within 30% of claimed, and an average total CO2 conversion efficiency of 53%.
