Novel In Situ Nano Fibrous Reinforced All Polymer Polypropylene-Nylon Composite

Self reinforced polymer composites are significantly different than the conventional fiber reinforced composites since there is no external additive and the polymer itself assumes fibrous morphology during melt /solution processing. In such materials, typically liquid crystalline polymers, the rigidity is imparted by the chemical structure which contains aromatic moieties connected to flexible tails. Such materials are expensive and difficult to process. In our recent studies [1] it was noted that fibrous morphology can be generated using immiscible blends of polymers by processing them under appropriate conditions of temperature, pressure and composition. Such fibrous morphology can be further tailored to obtain nanofibrous structures of one high strength component in the blend so that considerable improvements in the mechanical and optical properties are achieved.
