For many applications in consumer electronics and e-mobility lithium ion batteries (LIBs) are the energy source of choice because of their high energy-to-weight-ratio, lack of memory effect and low discharge when not in use. However, over the past years serious problems occurred as a consequence of short-circuit currents which led to overheating and ignition of the organic solvents used in the formulation of the electrolytes. Many efforts have been made to overcome these problems and new types of electrolytes are currently under worldwide investigation. Important requirements for the electrolytes include large electrochemical stabilities and sufficient to good conductivities and viscosities. In this presentation we will report our latest developments in the field ionic liquid based electrolytes for LiBs. The focus will be the use of mixtures of ionic liquids and additives in order to increase performance and safety of batteries in general.
