Nickel-Zinc Rechargeable Batteries – the High Performance, Low Cost, Clean Solution for Hybrid Vehicles

,

Keywords: , , ,

Rising interest in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) has created pressure to develop more powerful and efficient vehicle battery systems. While Lithium-Ion batteries have shown potential in fully electric applications, cost and safety issues leave little incentive for incremental performance advantages in hybrid vehicles compared with market incumbent Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH). As such, decades old NiMH has become the workhorse of an exuberant international HEV market. This technical abstract will discuss the performance and market merits of an old technology with a new application: Nickel-Zinc batteries for automotive applications, as they compare with traditional rechargeable battery chemistries.
