XTRLs International has developed a new control technology for intelligent load-following and demand-response dispatch of customer-owned integrated Distributed Generation in smart-grid applications by Utility Distribution Companies (UDC), demand response aggregators or end-user customers. The DG controller was conceived as a follow-on to an integrated renewable micro-grid project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. The research and demonstration in the Integrated DG project identified the need and led to the technical approach for a universal DG controller that can seamlessly integrate diverse DG resources to smart-grid applications. This paper describes the resulting new DG controller technology, it’s applications, market of opportunity, and successes in micro-grid demonstrations. Presenter/author David Olson, P.E. is Managing Director and founder of XTRLs International. He has a 20+ year history in the energy efficiency and renewable energy industries, including management positions at New Energy Ventures (later Constellation New Energy), EPRI (the Electric Power Research Institute), and Honeywell.
