India recognized the importance and value of the nanotechnology for its national development and initiated concentrated nanotechnology programs. The two major initiatives in India are by Department of Science and Technology and Department of Information Technology, and also there are initiatives by Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and Department of Biotechnology. This paper explains the initiatives taken by Department of Information Technology (DIT), Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), Government of India. The DIT Nanotechnology Initiatives Program is mainly concentrating on nano-electronics aspects of the nanotechnology and was initiated in 2004. The focus of the program initially is on capacity building and human resource development, Infrastructure creation and research & development in nano-electronics and nanotechnology and nanometrology. The program includes establishment of major centers on nanoelectronics and nanometrology, taking up of a number of R&D projects at academic R&D organizations across the country and Indian Nanoelectronics User Programs.
