Our research deals with using nanodiamond particles as an enterosorbent to remove mycotoxins from the gastrointestinal tract. We are working on developing an ideal enterosorbent by obtaining appropriate size nanoparticles, modify nanodiamond surface groups, and characterize the pH versus zeta potential. By use of theory and modeling, efficient exploration of diamond nanoparticle surface structures is achieved, which will provide a greater understanding of their sedimentation stability while yielding biological activity for targeted antitoxin applications. As will be discussed, characterization and functionalization of these novel structures will eventually lead to targeting sol formulations and binding properties for biotoxins permitting nanodiamonds to be further studied in an in vivo setting.
