Electrospunned silk fibroin has been considered as scaffold for tissue engineering. Particularly, it has been used for bone regeneration with nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA). Though some papers showed successful results of bone regeneration in nHA and electrospunned silk fibroin combination, it has been unclear whether there was benefit in silk and nHA combination compared to nHA only. We compared the combination graft to HA only graft in the rabbit calvarial defects model. The experimental animal was sacrificed at 4 and 8 weeks after grafting. The specimens were taken micro-computerized tomogram (m-CT) and undergone subsequent decalcification for histological analysis. In m-CT analysis, there was no statistically significant difference between groups in both observation points. However, nHA only showed significantly higher bone formation compared to combination graft in histological analysis (p<0.05). In conclusion, silk fibroin and nHA combination did not have any advantage in new bone formation compared to nHA only.
