A novel diagnostic electrochemical immunoassay device integrating lab-on-a-film-chip (LOFC) and microfluidic technologies with chromatographic methods of rapid immunoassays for In Vitro Diagnostics (IVD) has been developed. This LOFC device is produced by a lithography technique using a dry photo-resistant (DPR) film on a screen-printed electrode. It has several features making it possible to achieve one-step electrochemical immunoassay that performs all the same functions found in the lateral flow type rapid immunoassay. This LOFC device was developed in an effort to give a birth to a new platform technology, which can replace the current lateral flow immunoassay technology. By substituting the required biological materials depending on target analytes, this device should be able to be applied in the development of many diagnostic products such as those for the detection of drugs of abuse, cardiac markers, infectious diseases, fertility testing, etc. We had reported the application of this device for the detection of a cardiac marker, Myoglobin, in human plasma sample, and in this report we would like to show another successful application of this device in the development of a multiple drugs of abuse (DOA) test kit using saliva samples.
