Sensor data – such as that produced by many kinds of nanotechnologies – can be difficult to manage and maintain. This is especially true in areas of biomedicine where contextual information is important to capture for improved algorithmic computing. Ontologies have proven useful in many areas of both biomedicine and sensor fusion, but their design and implementation can be challenging due to the complexities associated with maintaining models, querying them, providing results, etc. New approaches to building ontologies should focus on using rich internet applications and other kinds of user interfaces that can provide medical researchers with appropriate tools to leverage ontologies, and in turn, better manage their sensor data.
