Individual carbon nanotube (CNT) cold field emitters are promising point electron sources because of their low energy spread, high brightness, and low power consumption [1-3]. Potential high-resolution applications for these efficient electron sources include advanced miniaturized electron microscopy and high throughput electron beam nanolithography. Precise fabrication and optimal design of device structures from the nano-scale to the macro-scale has been a great challenge to realizing feasible nanotechnology applications. In this paper, we demonstrate a novel fabrication technique for robust vertically oriented individual carbon nanotube field emission devices. Results form experimental and Modeling Studies of the CNT cathodes are presented.
