Nanofibers are an advanced optical media that can deliver extremely high reflectance values over large areas. The materials are made in high volumes in a roll-to-roll process using known spinning technologies. Nanofiber reflectors are particularly advantageous in lighting where traditional reflector materials such as paints and metallized plastics have substantial parasitic absorption. Since the diffuse reflectance of nanofiber materials can be as high as 0.98, the incorporation of this material into most common luminaires can increase luminous flux by as much as 40%. This luminous flux increase also raises luminous efficacy and luminaire efficiency, which can yield significant energy savings. Test results from troffers and downlights will be presented to demonstrated the potential savings of this approach. In summary, nanofiber reflectors are an innovative technology platform for the lighting industry that enable substantial energy savings and produces aesthetically pleasing light. The technology can be applied to any lighting fixture, from traditional fluorescents to energy-saving LEDs. This allows builders, architects, lighting engineers, and designers to change their lighting designs in order to reduce installation costs while lowering operating and maintenance costs.
