Ferromagnetic Gd5Si4 Nanoparticles for Medical Applications

,

Keywords: ,

The Gd5(SixGe1-x)4 system has been widely studied in the bulk form, but synthesis of nanoparticles of the material have never been reported. Iowa State University researchers have developed a process to fabricate ferromagnetic submicrometer Gd5Si4 nanoparticles using the scalable and cost-effective technique of high-energy ball milling. These nanoparticles have potential for application in a number of areas, including as a ferromagnetic MRI contrast agent, hyperthermic cancer treatment, and MRI thermometry.
