In this study, we developed a novel technique called magnetic hydrogel-based cell patterning (MHCP) to easily achieve heterotypic cell patterning in both of multi-well plate-based methods and microfluidic system. We also demonstrated that the material of magnetic hydrogel and the processes of MHCP produced negligible effects on cell viability. The 2-D heterotypic cell patterning and layer-by-layer 3-D tissue reconstruction could be applied as more complex models in disease research models and tissue engineering.
