Embedded fiber optic sensors for battery performance monitoring in Lithium ion battery cells

This paper is focused on the development of an embedded fiber optic sensor for monitoring the performance of Lithium ion battery (LIB) cells. The number of LIB cells are proliferating mainly due to the global initiative for promoting electric mobility. In electric and hybrid vehicles, battery cells are managed by a control system that manipulates the charging and discharging processes based on the estimation of the state of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH) of individual cells. However, the existing estimation methods rely on collecting electric current and voltage data which is highly dependent on the measurement accuracy and error accumulation. To improve the SOC and SOH estimation, it is imperative to use a sensor embedded inside the battery cell which can directly transduces the changes in the electrochemistry of the battery. Optical fiber sensors are viable candidates for this application, due to their robustness to electromagnetic interference, resistance to electrochemical environments, and high signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio. In this paper, the development of an LIB embedded sensor based on evanescent wave optical fibers is presented. The experimental results have shown promising results for the detection of SOC and SOH in LIB cells.
